Árboles o arbustos, generalmente aromáticos. Hojas simples, alternas, persistentes. Flores hermafroditas o unisexuales, actinomorfas. Estambres en 3-4 verticilos. Pistilo súpero, con estilo simple. Fruto carnoso, a menudo rodeado por el receptáculo acrescente.
Integrada por 32 géneros y c. 2500 especies distribuidas por las zonas tropicales y subtropicales, con escasos representantes en las zonas templadas.
