Pseudagrion buenafei View in CoL : Müller (1996): 377 –379, Figs 1–3 (description ♂ ♀; ♂ appendages; Mindanao, Philippines);— Hämäläinen & Müller (1997): 261 (Mindanao).

Examined specimens from the type series (4♂♂)

♂ holotype, x.1991, Atongan River , Katanglad Mountains, Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines, Alex Buenafe leg., ex. Coll. Roland A. Müller, RMNH, JvT no. 17838 ( Figs 15–16) ;— 1♂ paratype, 24./ 25.xi.1991, Muntian creek , Mt. Kalatungan , Olayan , Mabadiang, Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines, 1200–1400 m a.s.l., Alex Buenafe leg., ex. Coll. Roland A. Müller, RMNH, no. 1506118 ;— 1♂ paratype, ix.1995, Babang creek , Lake Agko , Ilomavis , Mt. Apo, North Cotabato, Mindanao, Philippines, 1600–1700 m a.s.l., Alex Buenafe leg., ex. Coll. Roland A. Müller, RMNH, no. 1506120 ;— 1♂ paratype, 24.xi.1995, Mansabilan creek , Mt. Kalatungan , Dumatap , Mebadiang, Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines, 1000–1300 m a.s.l., Alex Buenafe leg., ex. Coll. Roland A. Müller, RMNH, no. 1506121 .

Müller (1996) stated that the holotype should be deposited at SMF, but Hämäläinen (2017) corrected that statement: the holotype was deposited at RMNH.

Other specimens examined (1♂)

Philippines, Mindanao Island: 1♂, x.1991, Atongan River, Katanglad Mountains , Bukidnon, Alex Buenafe leg., ex. Coll. Roland A. Müller, RMNH, no. 1506113 .

Characterization of male

Head ( Figs 15, 80): Labrum reddish brown to obscure blackish; anteclypeus red; postclypeus black; antefrons black, with anterior margin and laterally red; postfrons and vertex black; postocular spots and occipital bar red; rear of head black, but a pale patch along the centre of the eye margins; base and scape of antennae black, following segments brownish.

Thorax ( Figs 15, 97): Pronotum with anterior lobe black, its posterior centre reddish, extending towards middle lobe; middle pronotal lobe otherwise black, with a centrally divided reddish rectangular patch in the middle, and on each side a large reddish patch dorsolaterally; propleuron black above, broadly reddish below and to rear; posterior lobe of pronotum blackish, with reddish centre; apical edge of posterior lobe convex. Pterothorax dorsally black, with antehumeral stripe red (may be interrupted); laterally red, with a black stripe each at posterior quarter of interpleural and metapleural suture, interpleural suture with a black spot anterior of the black stripe; ventrally pale, may be covered with whitish pruinosity. Legs blackish, with coxae and trochanters reddish.

Abdomen ( Figs 15, 114a, b): S1 red; S2 red with a small black triangle marking dorsally at posterior end; S3–7 dorsally black, laterally reddish; S8–10 red with black apical ring.

Caudal appendages ( Figs 131a–c): Cercus blackish; slightly shorter than S10; in lateral view subrectangular, inter-lobe notch placed low on apex; in dorsal view cercus narrow, with apex of superior lobe of cercus curved inward (more clearly so in dorsolateral view); an inward directed projection is situated at just after half-length on the superior lobe of the cercus; a small subbasal interior projection on inferior lobe of cercus, visible in dorsal and dorsolateral views, this bulge-like projection bearing a sharp proximal edge; paraproct reddish, around half as long as cercus, in lateral view somewhat triangular and tapered, with rounded apex; in dorsal view broadly rounded, concave bowl-like, with small black tooth at medial edge.

Wings with 14.5–17.5 px in forewing, and 14.5–15.5 px in hindwing.

Measurements (mm): Total length (with appendages) 46.3–49.0; abdomen length (without appendages) 37.5– 39.4; hindwing 26.4–30.0; forewing 27.7–30.0; Pt in forewing 0.7–0.8; male cercus 0.7.

Characterization of female [not examined, characterization adopted from Müller (1996)]

Head: As in male, but with a black triangular mark at frons.

Thorax: Pronotum and pterothorax as in male, but red replaced by greenish-yellow; legs as in the male.

Abdomen: S1 reddish-brown; S2 reddish-brown, with narrow black middorsal marking, widened apically; S3– 10 dorsally black, laterally reddish-brown.

Diagnosis

Both sexes of this species are separated from congeneric species, and especially the co-occurring P. pilidorsum , by the morphology of the male cercus (compare Figs 131a–c, 143a–c), as well as by the combination of a largely black frons and vertex (compare Figs 80, 92), a black humeral stripe (compare Figs 97, 109), and blackish legs (compare Figs 15, 63, 64, 165). Pseudagrion buenafei is also larger (total length 46–49 mm) than P. pilidorsum (38–46 mm). Additionally, the male is separated from all congeners by the almost entirely red abdominal segment S8 ( Figs 15, 114a, b).

Distribution

Endemic to Mindanao, Philippines ( Fig. 2).
