(£). crenata Siebold & Zucc. ). 2-3 m; principal branches erect, with peeling bark. Leaves 4-8 cm, ovate, acute, finely serrate, shortly stalked, scabrid on both surfaces with white, stellate hairs. Flowers in small, erect panicles. Calyx and hypanthium tomentose. Petals 6-10 mm, suberect, oblong or narrow-elliptical, white, often tinged with pink outside. Filaments broad, usually with conspicuous shoulders or lobes near the top. Cultivatedfor ornament; locally naturalized in C. Europe. [Au.] (China and Japan.)
