Glabrous tree up to 20 m, with grey bark and a pyramidal crown. Leaves 7- 13 x 2-5 cm (on vigorous shoots up to 20 x 6 cm), ovate-lanceolate, acute, cuneate at base, shining green, thin, usually undulate, evergreen. Flowers fragrant, in few-flowered umbellate cymes. Petals white, lanceolate. Capsule 10-12 mm, obovoid, glabrous, orange when ripe, with 2 valves. Widely cultivated for ornament in S. & W. Europe; extensively naturalized in the Açores and locally elsewhere. [Az Lu.] (S.E. Australia .)
