( P. acerifolia (Aiton) Willd. , P. cuneata Willd. ).

Like 1 but leaves lobed at most to the middle; central lobe little longer than its width at base. Capitula nearly always 2. 2« = 42. Commonly planted in much of Europe, especially as a roadside tree.

It has been suggested that this tree is a hybrid between P. occidental L. , from North America and 1 or, alternatively, that it is a cultivar of 1. As its origin is unknown there seems at present to be no means of deciding between these possibilities.
