Plant 15- 60 cm. Leaves variable. Petals 4-14 mm. Silicula 10-25 mm; lower segment with 2 lateral, more or less deflexed projections at the apex; upper segment expanding into a broad membranous margin at the base. A variable species divisible into at least 4 subspecies in Europe. Characters of the fruit appear to be the most reliable for distinguishing the subspecies.
