Annual to perennial herbs; glabrous or hairs unbranched and branched. Leaves entire to pinnatifid. Sepals not saccate at base; petals white, pale purple or yellow, sometimes absent. Fruit a siliqua; valves 1 -veined; style short, stigma subcapitate. Seeds small (less than 1 mm). (Stenophragma Celak.)
Literature: O. E. Schulz in Engler, Pflanzenreich 86 (IV. 105): 268-85 (1924).
The limits of this genus are uncertain. For a full discussion of the problem see N. Hylander, Bull. Jard. Bot. Bruxelles 27: 591— 604 (1957), F. Laibach, Planta 51: 148-66 (1958), and À. Love, Svensk Bot. Tidskr. 55: 211-17 (1961). It seems probable that Cardaminopsis should be combined with Arabidopsis , but some species of Arabidopsis may have to be removed from the enlarged genus. Schulz’s delimitation is maintained here pending a full investigation of all the species of Arabidopsis .
