Leaf-bases forming a compact tunic. Leaves asymmetrically 1- to 2-pinnate with usually 2 pairs of ovate-lanceolate, usually acute segments 1-5-2-2(-2-5) mm wide. Pedicel 5-15 cm, appressedhispid or patent-hispid. Petals 15-20(-30) mm, usually white. Capsule c. 12 mm, oblong-ellipsoid. Stigmatic disc flat; rays usually 5, decurrent for about j of the length of the ovary. 2n—14. • C. & E. Alps. Au Ge He. P. alpinum subsp. ernesti-mayeri Markgraf in Hegi, III. FI. Mitteleur. ed. 2, 4 (1): 40 (1958) from the S.E. Alps and Mte Majella, Appennini, resembles 19 but has obtuse leaf-segments, and a pyramidal stigmatic disc with rays decurrent for about | o f the length of the ovary.
