Stems 30-150 cm. Leaves dark green, rather stiff, forked once or twice into linear, flattened, denticulate segments. Nut 4-5 mm, with a terminal spine at least as long, and two basal spines of variable length. 2« = 24. Most of Europe. All except BI Cr Fa Is Rs (K) Sb.
