Stems 8-30 cm, numerous, stiff, much-branched, glabrous, quadrangular. Leaves spinous- subulate, canaliculate above. Inflorescence a subcapitate compound dichasium surrounded by spiny bracts. Calyx 5-toothed. Petals very small and narrow, white or pinkish, with small coronal scales; anthers bluish. Capsule ovoid-ellipsoid. 2« = 60. Open stony or gravelly habitats. S. Europe, from C.
