Annual, but more robust than 3, with erect stems 3-12(-20) cm, branched at the base and from above the middle; plant usually glandular-pubescent, at least above, rarely glabrous. Leaves up to 12 mm. Cymes lax, many-flowered; pedicels 5-20 mm. Sepals 2-4 mm, linear to ovate-lanceolate; petals slightly shorter than sepals; anthers yellow. Capsule 1-11 times as long as sepals. Seeds (0-3-)0-4-0-6 mm, minutely tuberculate, reddish-brown. Dry sandy places. S. & W. Europe, extending northwards to England, C. Germany and S. Ukraine; occasionally naturalized elsewhere. A very variable species, particularly in height, pubescence and size and shape of sepals.
