Annual herbs, often pubescent with stellate hairs. Leaves alternate, linear or lanceolate, flat or semicylindrical. Flowers hermaphrodite, solitary in the axils of bracts, in spikes arranged in a branched inflorescence. Perianth-segments O-3(-5). Stamens 1-5. Stigmas 2. Achene strongly compressed, usually with a marginal wing. Seeds vertical.

All species occur on shingle or in sandy habitats.
