7. S. maritima (L.) Dumort. , FZ. Belg. 22 (1827).
Annual up to 50(-100) cm, of very variable habit and colour. Leaves 10- 50 x c. 1 mm, semicylindrical, acute or subobtuse. Cymes dense. Fruiting perianth not inflated, green or red. Seeds finely reticulate, usually horizontal. In suitable habitats throughout most o f Europe except the north-east and extreme north. All except Az Fa He Is Rs (N) Sb.
Very variable in habit, leaf-shape and colour. Very little of the variation is correlated with distribution. The following subspecies appear to be the most distinct.
1 Perianth-segments with a membranous margin, with a keel and small tubercle on the back (c) subsp. pannonica
1 Perianth-segments without either a membranous margin, or keel or tubercle on the back
2 Upper surface of the leaves flat; seeds distinctly reticulate (a) subsp. maritima
2 Upper surface of the leaves sulcate; seeds almost smooth ( b) subsp. salsa
