(5. myrsinifolia Salisb.). Often a shrub. Twigs slender. Young twigs whitish-pubescent, often glabrescent. Leaves orbicular-ovate to lanceolate, often glaucous beneath (but the apex always green), serrate or subentire, going black on drying; veins slender and not prominent. The following hybrids occur frequently:
S. cinerea x nigricans . Often like 29 but more hairy, decorticated wood with ridges, and ovary more or less hairy.
5. nigricans x phylicifolia . Often like 29 but less hairy, waxy bloom of lower surface o f leaf more pronounced, and ovary more or less hairy.
S. myrsinites x nigricans . Leaves more or less green and shiny on both surfaces; catkins purplish.
S. atrocinerea* nigricans . Like 29 or intermediate; decorticated wood with ridges; ovary hairy; indumentum sometimes tending to be rust-coloured on the lower surface of leaf.
