Leaves up to 1 - 5 cm wide when mature, narrow, linear with very narrow cuneate base, green above, silky beneath; margin reflexed; lateral veins usually 20-35 pairs. Catkins appearing before the leaves. Style more than | as long as ovary. C. Europe extending westwards to Ireland and eastwards to the Ukrainian Carpathians, and Bulgaria.
