D w arf shrub with a creeping and rooting stem, and short, few-leaved twigs. Leaves 1_3(_5) cm, less than twice as long as wide, orbicular or ovate, rounded to retuse at apex, cordate (rarely cuneate) at base, entire, coriaceous, dark green, subglabrous and rugose with impressed veins above, whitish, subglabrous and prominently reticulateveined beneath; lateral veins 2-5 pairs; petiole 5-15 mm. Stipules absent. Catkins 1-2-3 cm, appearing after the leaves, terminal on leafless pubescent peduncles up to 2-5 cm. Bracts obovate, light- brown, villous within. Capsule ovoid, sessile or subsessile, tomentose; style short. 2n = 38. Arctic and subarctic Europe (excluding Faeröer and Iceland) and in the high mountains southwards to the Pyrenees, Italian Alps and Macedonia.
