Like 4 but leaves suborbicular or broadly ovate, greyish-glaucous above; lateral veins 5-8 pairs; stipules membranous, wider, glabrescent; perianth-lobes wide, obtuse; fruit sweet; involucral scales shorter and thicker. 2n = 24. S.W. Europe. Ga Hs Lu.

Often treated as a subspecies of 4, which it replaces in the south and west.
