Rhizomes short. Leaves simple or slightly lobed, with free veins. Sori oblong to narrowly linear, arranged in opposite pairs, those of two neighbouring veins parallel and close, and ultimately appearing like a single sorus; indusia linear, each attached on one side of the receptacle, those of a pair opening towards each other.

Leaves 10-60 cm, persistent; petiole up to half as long as lamina; lamina 3-6(-7) cm wide, linear-lanceolate, cordate at base, margin slightly undulate, entire. Sori 8-18 mm wide, linear, usually occupying more than half the width of the lamina. 2«=72. Shady places. S., W. & C. Europe, but rare in the Mediterranean region; S. Sweden. All except Fa Fe Is Sb Rs (N, B, C, E).

Many varieties of this species, some with curled or cleft fronds, are known both in nature and in cultivation. Hybrids with Asplénium trichomanes L. and A. adiantum-nigrum L. have been described by A. H. G. Alston (Proc. Linn. Soc. London 152: 142 (1940)) from Britain, and with A. lepidum C. Presi by G. Vida (Acta Bot. Acad. Sci. Hung. 9: 197 (1963)).
