Rhizome procumbent or creeping. Leaves of two kinds, the sterile 15-30 x 3-8-5 cm, patent, the fertile 30-60 x 14-20 cm, erect; petiole of sterile leaves half as long as lamina, of fertile leaves almost equalling lamina; scales pale brown; lamina linear- to oblong-lanceolate, glabrous, pinnate or 2-pinnate; pinnae 10-20 on each side, triangular-ovate or -oblong to lanceolate, shortly stalked, deeply pinnatifid or pinnate; pinnules oblong, obtuse, pinnately lobed or serrate. Sori in 2 rows on each fertile pinnule; indusium eglandular. 2/7=164. Wet places. Europe, southwards to S. France, N. Jugoslavia and S.C. Russia.
