Rhizome glabrous. Stem 30-150 cm x 2- 12 mm, simple or with irregularly whorled branches; ridges very narrow, smooth; grooves 10-30; sheaths green, closely applied to stem; teeth as many as grooves, black, at least at apex, not ribbed; central hollow at least | diameter of stem. E.x litorale Kühlew. ex Rupr., Beitr. Pfl. Russ. Reich. 4: 91 (1845) (£. arvense x fluviatile ) is like 5 but with stems more deeply grooved and with twice as many green bands, more branches, and loose sheaths with teeth black at the apex. It is recorded from numerous localities in N. & C. Europe.
