Evergreen trees with irregularly whorled branches. Winter-buds scaly. Leaves of two kinds: those on the leading and conebearing twigs spirally arranged, subulate, scale-like, keeled above, appressed or slightly patent; those on the lateral twigs distichous, linear to linear-oblong, flat, with 2 white stomatiferous bands beneath. Cones persistent, ripening in the second year; cone-scales 15-20.
