Up to 60 m. Twigs usually brown. Leaves tetragonal, stomatiferous on all four sides, acute, dark green. N. Europe, extending southwards in the mountains to the S. Alps and Bulgaria. Widely planted elsewhere for timber. Al Au Bu Cz Fe Ga Ge He It Ju No Po Rm Rs (N, B, C) Su [Be Br Da Hb Ho Hs Hu].
