Stem above ground, short, creeping, herbaceous, usually with few or no branches, and producing a single erect, simple branch with curved, subulate, acute leaves, 4-6 mm. Spike 1 -5-3 cm (or more), with subappressed sporophylls. 2« = 156. Moors, wet heaths and dunes. Most of Europe, except the Mediterranean region and E. Russia.
