Like 1 but branches 3-7 mm wide, erect. Leaves shorter (3-7 mm), horizontally patent to appressed, linear-subulate, thick, nearly entire and acuminate; spikes shorter (0-5- 1 - 5 cm). 2n = 68. Mountain grassland and moors. Arctic and subarctic Europe southwards to 62° N. Fa Fe Is No Rs (N) Su.

Intermediates between 1 and 2 occur, and further investigation may show that they should be given subspecific rank.
