Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Edmago Island , Kavieng , New Ireland by Munro (1958: 188). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell on 21 June 2014; a video of a specimen taken from Alexander Passage, off southeastern New Hanover, 5– 14 m depth, at St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Kiribati ( Line Islands) and Pitcairn, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to off northern Australia, New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in coral reefs, usually close to shelter, 1–60 m depth. Marine.
