Hautfarn
Rhizom dünn (Durchmesser bis 1 mm). Blätter fiederteilig oder gefiedert, mit fein gezähnten Abschnitten, kahl. Sori mit fast bis zum Grunde geteiltem, 2klappigem Schleier.
Die Gattung umfaβt etwa 25 meist tropische Arten (Verbreitungskarte von Meusel 1964). Die Gattung Hymenophyllum besitzt die gröβten Chromosomen, die bis jetzt bei Farnen gefunden wurden. An Material aus England wurde bei H. tunbrigense die Chromosomenzahl n = 13 und bei H. radicans n = 18 gezählt (Manton 1950).
