So far, Leptopus hispanus Rambur, 1840
( Heteroptera : Leptopodidae ) has been reported as present on the Canary islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria ( Spain) ( BAENA & VÁZQUEZ, 1985; HEISS & BÁEZ, 1990; AUKEMA et al., 2006, 2013; ROCA-CUSACHS et al., 2020).
Regarding the presence of L. hispanus on the island of Gran Canaria there seem to be doubts: In the online database Banco de Datos de Biodiversidad de Canarias it is currently mentioned as “Doubtful, equivocal presence or extinction” ( GOBIERNO DE CANARIAS, 2024). This should be checked.
Now, the island of La Palma can be added to the list of the distribution of L. hispanus in the Canary archipelago: On 26-06-2024, an adult specimen ( Fig. 1 View Fig ) was found near the camping area visitor centre in the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente. Two photographs of the specimen were uploaded to the online database iNaturalist (see here).
