The species was described in Thunberg (1813: 381) and Thunberg (1815: 115), the former with a reference to the latter work (see Discussion). Schönherr (1845: 308) referred to the name but did not see the specimen. This is a species of Gymnetron Schönherr (comb. n.). The name is a senior subjective synonym of G. hirsutum (Rosenschöld, 1838) , syn. n. (action attributable to R. Caldara). One specimen.
