The species was described in Thunberg (1813: 380) and Thunberg (1815: 115), the former with a reference to the latter work (see Discussion). Schönherr (1843) synonymized R. vitellus with Acallopistus vellicosus Schönherr, 1826 , an action overlooked by Haran (2013). The name is resurrected here and regarded as a subjective senior synonym of Acallopistus guttatus Boheman, 1835 (syn. n.). One specimen.
