SHORT DESCRIPTION: A medium to large-sized (9-11 mm) Osmia species. Females can be recognized by the long orange-red hairs on their thorax and the first two terga. The scopa is black. Males are characterized by numerous long hairs along the entire posterior margin of their antennae ( PROSI et al., 2016, WESTRICH, 2018; MÜLLER, 2018).
DISTRIBUTION IN EUROPE: Osmia pilicornis seems to have a preference for colder climates and occurs from Western, Central and Eastern temperate Europe eastwards to the Kemerovo region in western Siberia ( PROSI et al., 2016). It has not been found above 1000 m a.s.l. It has been found in all of Belgium’s neighbouring countries, except for the Netherlands ( REEMER, 2018; www.waarneming.nl).
EU RED LIST STATUS: Least concern (LC) ( NIETO et al., 2014).
