Andrena (Biareolina) lagopus (Latreille, 1809) View in CoL

Figs 2 View Fig , 9 View Fig E-F, 14 A

SHORT DESCRIPTION: A medium-sized (9-11mm) ground-nesting solitary bee that is oligolectic on Brassicaceae . It superficially resembles Andrena dorsata (Kirby, 1802) and A. propinqua (Schenck, 1853) , but it is unique in the European fauna in having only two submarginal cells, which along with other diagnostic characters of species in the genus Andrena , allow to readily identify this species, even in the field (SCHMID- EGGER & SCHEUCHL, 1997).

DISTRIBUTION IN EUROPE: found throughout Southern, Western and Central Europe and North Africa ( GUSENLEITNER & SCHWARZ, 2002) with an Atlanto-Mediterranean distribution ( WESTRICH &SCHWENNINGER, 1997; ZETTEL et al., 2019). No records from the United Kingdom ( ELSE & EDWARDS, 2018), but it is present in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg ( HERRERA MESÍAS & WEIGAND, 2021), the Netherlands ( TANIS & REEMER, 2020; VAN ‘T BOSCH & RAEMAKERS, 2020), Germany and France (GUSENLEITNER & SCHWARZ, 2022).

EU RED LIST STATUS: Least concern (LC) ( NIETO et al., 2014)

COMMENTS:

- Andrena lagopus View in CoL is currently expanding its range northwards in Europe. Until recently its northern range limit was just south of Belgium. The species was also recently recorded for the first time in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in 2019 ( HERRERA MESÍAS & WEIGAND, 2021) and the Netherlands ( TANIS & REEMER, 2020; VAN ‘T BOSCH & RAEMAKERS, 2020). It feeds on any kind of weedy Brassicaceae View in CoL , the abundance of which have, if anything, decreased relative to the historical baseline. It therefore seems most likely that the current range expansion is not driven by an increase in host plant abundance but instead by climate change, and more specifically warmer spring temperatures.

- This species was descripted as a new species for Belgium in WOOD (2023).
