SHORT DESCRIPTION: Sphecodes ruficrus is a moderately large wild bee species (6-9 mm) that is bound to sandy sites because of the Andrena species it parasitizes. Females have long black hairs on their head and thorax and are easily distinguished from other Sphecodes species in Belgium by their striking reddish tibiae and tarsi.
HOST SPECIES: In Belgium, Andrena humilis is the most probable host ( BOGUSCH & STRAKA, 2012; WESTRICH, 2018).
DISTRIBUTION IN EUROPE: Southern and Western Europe, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Russia ( BOGUSCH & STRAKA, 2012; SCHEUCHL & WILLNER, 2016). No records from the United Kingdom ( ELSE &EDWARDS, 2018) and the Netherlands ( REEMER, 2018; www.waarneming.nl), but it has been found in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg ( HERRERA MESÍAS & WEIGAND, 2021).
