Bibio canadensis Macquart, 1838 View in CoL
B. canadensis Macquart was treated as a “questionable” junior synonym of B. xanthopus Wiedeman by Hardy (1945). The holotype male of B. canadensis (MNHN) was studied by SF in 1998; it was in poor condition as it was missing the antennae and all but one fore and one mid leg. The terminalia were also damaged; epandrium destroyed, but gonostyli intact. Other discernable characters included: remaining legs orange, fore tibial spur slightly less than half the length of the spine, r-m subequal to base of Rs, thoracic pile yellow, posterior wing veins concolorous with the membrane. Based on the long slender gonostylus and posterior wing veins concolorous with the membrane B. canadensis should be considered a junior synonym of B. brunnipes (Fabricius) rather than B. xanthopus . Since B. brunnipes is the older name, this change does not impact current usage. Photos of the type can be found in the MNHN database (https://science.mnhn.fr/institution/mnhn/collection/ed/item/ed6999?listIndex=1&listCount=3477).
