Distribution — Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Madagascar, the Comores, the Seychelles, Réunion and Mauritius.

Nomenclatural notes — Clayton (1980) and Clayton & Renvoize (1982) only mention the presence of the isotype of Panicum umbellatum at K. Vorontosova (2022) located the holotype at LE, which is to be regarded as the designation of the lectotype.
