87. Caracal, Caracal caracal (Schreber, 1776) View in CoL
(IUCN Red List: LC)
Subspecies: C. c. aharonii ( Matschie, 1912) and C. c. schmitzi ( Matschie, 1912).
Distribution: Status uncertain, probably very rare ( Fig. 95 View FIGURE 95 ).
Previous records: From the headwaters of the Khabour River ( Matschie 1912) to Palmyra ( Evans 1994), a specimen in the Palmyra Archaeological Museum was killed by locals between the 1970s and the 1980s around Palmyra ( Masseti 2009), and a live Caracal was brought from Al-Badia to Doma Zoo in 2001 ( Shehab 2002).
Recent records: Local hunters indicated that the species is probably present in Deir Sawwan northwest of Aleppo and in Ghmam northeast of Latakia. However, further confirmation is needed, as some morphological similarities with the sympatric Jungle Cat Felis chaus —which can be misidentified as Caracal caracal —can affect the reliability of these records.
Remarks: C. c. aharonii ( Matschie, 1912) was reported from Mesopotamia ( Matschie 1912), C. c. schmitzi ( Matschie, 1912) is present as elsewhere in Arabia ( Harrison & Bates 1991).
