Subspecies: P. c. syriaca (Schreber, 1784).
Distribution: Rare; restricted to the rocky mountains of ar-Ruqad Valley ( Shehab 2002) and Yarmuk Valley ( Serra 2008). ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 )
Remarks: The Rock Hyrax is the only representative of the order Hyracoidea in the Middle East. This is an African species that extended its range along the Jordan Valley reaching as far as southern Lebanon and the Yarmouk River Basin ( Rifai et al. 2000). Kumerloeve (1975) did not list P. capensis among the mammals of Syria, but an observation was recorded in the southwest of Golan close to Lake Tiberias in 1990 by M. Kasparek ( Rifai et al. 2000).
