Original material:—not traced.

Nomenclatural note:—In the protologue, Strobl quoted the following locality: “… ich sammelte sie häufig auf steinigen Kalkabhängen des Monte Cairo ob Monte Cassino an der römischneapolitanischen Grenze ca. 4500 Fuss und nenne sie V. cassinensis . ”. We were not able to trace original material neither in ADMONT nor in any other consulted herbarium. However, Strobl (1877), as resulting from the protologue, collected many samples of V. cassinensis , and for this reason we prefer not to select a neotype.

Taxonomic note:—The taxonomic relationship between Viola cassinensis subsp. cassinensis and V. cassinensis subsp. pseudogracilis needs further study ( Bartolucci et al. 2018). Nevertheless, V. cassinensis subsp. cassinensis differs from V. cassinensis subsp. pseudogracilis primarily for the spur slender instead of stout, and also for lower leaves cordate, stipules subspathulate to lanceolate and root greenish-purple.
