Arbustos erectos, con tallos macizos y hojas caedizas. Corola subactinomorfa, campanulada, o bien zigomorfa y bilabiada con tubo corto, recto, ± giboso hacia la base, y limbo con el labio superior tetralobulado. Bayas concrescentes en toda su longitud o ± adnatas por su base, rara vez libres.
