Material examined. GERMANY: Rheinland Pfalz , Schalkenmehrener Maar, in rock encrustations, pupal exuviae, 10.viii.1911, A. Thienemann ( ZSM) .

Male. The types could not be located. According to the original description the total length is 3.5 mm; the antennal stem is black; thorax yellow, mesonotal (scutal) stripes black or brown ( var. suecicum Kieffer ); metanotum black; halteres white; legs brownish yellow; abdomen and hypopygium brown; posterior margins of tergites yellowish. AR = 2. Wing densely haired. LR = 1.2. Gonostylus medially straight, with a few setae in a row. Projection of superior volsella slightly bent, short. Inferior volsella do not reach the proximal third of the gonostylus, in distal third somewhat widened, and heart-shaped indented at apex.

Pupa (n =1, exuviae lacking segments IV – VI)

Frontal setae, cephalothorax, margins of segments and caudolateral spur pale brown.

Cephalothorax. Cephalic tubercles absent. Prealar tubercle apparently absent. Wing sheath 1.64 mm long.

Abdomen ( Figs 18A–B). Tergite I bare; tergites II and III both with strong, anterior row of spines, without shagreen; tergites VII and VIII both without spinules and shagreen. Tergite II with single row of about 52 caudal hooks. Pedes spurii B strong and prominent on segment II. Caudolateral spur ( Figs 18C–D) 110 µm long, with 1 strong apical tooth, 3 inner teeth and 3 lateral accessory points. Segments VII and VIII each with 4 L taeniae. Anal lobe fringe with 40 taeniae.

Remarks. The exuviae could be designated as a neotype. However, at the moment it seems better to regard the species as a nomen dubium and hope for a future association.

Distribution. The species is known only from Germany with certainty. The many records from Eastern Europe (see Saether & Spies 2004) most likely all refer to Phaenopsectra flavipes .
