Diagnosis. A large species, easily distinguished by the orange-red antenna, bare arista, and orange-red tip of abdominal tergite 5.
Material examined. BMNH: Vanuatu: Aneityum: Red Crest , 1200 feet, 3 miles NE of Anelgauhat, vi.1955, 1 ♂, L.E. Cheesman . Éfaté: Port Vila [as Sandwich Island, Vila], 25.xii.1922, 1 ♂, T.T. Barnard .
BPBM: Vanuatu: Malekula: Lamap , 19–21.ix.1967, 1 ♀ ; 25.ix.1967, 1 ♀ ; 8–21.ix.1967, 1 ♀, J. & M. Sedlacek.
Comments. This species was first recorded from Vanuatu by Pont (1989) on the basis of the BMNH specimens listed above.
Distribution. Australia (NSW, Qld), Bonin Is, Easter I., Fiji, French Polynesia ( Marquesas, Society Is), Guam, Hawai‘ian Is, Lord Howe I., Norfolk I., PNG ( PNG), New Caledonia ( New Caledonia), Tonga, Vanuatu, Wake I., Western Samoa; tropicopolitan.
