Coccus diacopeis Anderson, 1788a: 4 ; 1788b: 25, 26; Signoret, 1877: 613; Fernald, 1903: 325.
In his letter No. 14, Anderson applied this name to insects`On some young Citron Trees just landed from China, I ®nd a Coccus Insect View in CoL more deeply intersected between the abdominal rings than any of those on the Coast [Coromandel], which I have therefore called Diacopeis... ’. It was listed by Anderson (1788a: 4) as the Coccus Diacopeis View in CoL , on the Citrus Sinensis. View in CoL
The brief description and comparison with species that Anderson knew in India validates the name. The comparison also indicates that the species is a mealybug in the family Pseudococcidae , probably Planococcus citri (Risso) as currently understood, but its true identity is obscure. The name should remain as Coccus diacopeis .
