Lectotype (designated by Pruski 2005: 2027):— BRAZIL. São Paulo: between Mogi das Cruzes and São Paulo, Nov 1833, P. Lund 866 ( G-DC [G 00456737 ], digital image!; isolectotypes C [ C10007025 ], digital image!; C [ C10007027 ], digital image!; S [ S-R-3508 ], digital image!).
Note:— Calea triantha is the only scientific name listed in this study for which its type is not based on a plant specimen. The whereabouts of the original specimens studied by Vellozo is unknown, but the plates published earlier (Vellozo 1831) are accepted as types for the new taxa described by him in the Flora Fluminensis.
According to Pruski (2005), this plate undoubtedly represents this species and we agree with his findings. The monumental work of Vellozo (1829 [1825], 1831, 1881) in Flora Fluminensis describes the flora of the state of Rio de Janeiro, which occupied an area whose state borders has changed since the time of publication. According to Pastore et al. (2021), the specimen on which the illustration is based upon was collected in Cunha, São Paulo, where it still can be found. This species does not occur within the current borders of the state of Rio de Janeiro (Reis-Silva et al. 2023).
The protologue of M. hispida Candolle (1836) and the study by Pruski (2005) do not indicate the collection site of the type specimen, but we found this information in Baker (1884). Interestingly, this synonym was collected between Mogi das Cruzes and São Paulo in São Paulo state, which are nearby Cunha that currently lies within São Paulo state boundaries.
