Calea phyllolepis Baker (1884: 260–261) View in CoL .
Meyeria phyllolepis ( Baker 1884: 260–261) Pruski (2023: 98) .
Protologue:—“Habitat in campis prov. S. Paulo Sello 1041! 2534! 3140!”.
Lectotype (designated by Pruski 2023):— BRAZIL. Rio Grande do Sul: F. Sellow s.n. ( K [ K000323167 ]!).
Note:—The types of Calea phyllolepis were not found in K. A record of a possible type specimen was found based on one photo from B in the Berlin Negatives collection at F. However, as this photograph was taken from a specimen deposited in B that was destroyed, it is not accessible anymore ( Grimé & Plowman 1986). Unfortunately, it was not possible to find any remaining specimen collected by F. Sellow numbered as 1041, 2534 or 3140 in the K herbarium, neither in other herbaria consulted.
According to Herter (1945), the numbers that Baker (1884) indicated as types do not refer to specimens collected in São Paulo state. These numbers from Sellow are from a period when he was traveling by boat between Rio Pardo and Porto Alegre, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Calea phyllolepis occurs naturally and is well represented by several collections along this area, in accordance with the species description, numbering and information provided by Herter (1945). Additionally, this species does not occur in São Paulo and Paraná states (Reis-Silva et al. 2023). Therefore, it is assumed that the type specimens were in fact collected in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
