Centris mexicana Smith, 1854 View in CoL . 378.

Type data: Smith (1854) described this species based on an undetermined number of males collected in Mexico. A syntype is housed at NHMUK and is here designated the lectotype. The specimen has the following data label: Type H. T. [red-rimmed circular label, printed]\ B.M. TYPE HYM. [printed] 17B.909 [handwritten]\ [circular label] Mexico [handwritten]\ ♂ [handwritten]\ Centris mexicana Type. Smith. [handwritten]\ mexicana Sm. Type [handwritten]. The lectotype is in good condition and is coded NHMUK 010812605 in the NHMUK data portal.

Snelling (1974) mentioned that the “type” of this species was a male, not a female as originally mentioned by Smith (1854), without citing additional information that could help to recognize the specimen; therefore, this cannot be interpreted as a valid lectotype designation.

Type locality: Mexico .

Comment: The type locality cannot be further narrowed down than to Mexico.
