Brownia Johnson 2021: 325 (type species: Corymbites coniungens LeConte, 1853 , original designation).
The senior homonym is Brownia d’Orbigny, 1841 (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Atlantidae ), as listed by Scudder (1882) and Neave (1939), and an objective synonym of Helicophlegma d’Orbigny, 1841 . Tesch (1908) treated Helicophlegma d’Orbigny as a junior synonym of Oxygyrus Benson, 1835 , which is itself now a junior synonym of Atlanta Lesueur, 1817 . The further complicated taxonomy of these pelagic gastropods is partially illustrated by the oldest synonyms listed here as derived from MolluscaBase (2023):
Atlanta Lesueur 1817: 390 (type species: Atlanta peronii Lesueur 1817: 390 , subsequent designation).
Steira Eschscholtz 1825: 735 (type species: Steira lamanoni Eschscholtz 1825: 735 , monotypy).
Oxygyrus Benson 1835: 174 (type species: Atlanta keraudrenii Lesueur 1817: 174 , subsequent designation).
Helicophlegma d’Orbigny 1841: 100 (type species: Helicophlegma candei d’Orbigny 1841: 100 , monotypy).
Brownia d’Orbigny 1841: 101 (type species: Helicophlegma candei d’Orbigny 1841: 100 , monotypy).
Ladas Cantraine 1841: 37 (type species: Ladas keraudrenii Cantraine 1841: 38 , monotypy).
The junior homonym Brownia Nunberg, 1963 was proposed for a group of bark beetles in the Xyloborini ( Coleoptera : Curculionidae : Scolytinae ). Wood (1980) synonymized Brownia Nunberg (as “ Browneia ”) with Ambrosiodmus Hopkins, 1915 , then ( Wood 1986) repeated the “ Browneia ” misspelling.
Brownia Nunberg 1963: 37 (junior homonym; type species: Xyleborus illepidus Schedl 1941: 402 , original designation) (synonym of Ambrosiodmus Hopkins 1915: 55 ; type species: Xyleborus tachygraphus Zimmermann, 1868 , original designation; see Wood and Bright 1992).
Browneia ; Wood 1980: 96, 1986: 83 (incorrect subsequent spelling of Brownia Nunberg , not d’Orbigny; see Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal 2009; ICZN 1999: Art. 33.3).
With regard to digital searches for homonyms, the “ candidatus ” name Brownia rhizoecola ( Gruwell et al. 2010) is applied to a P-endosymbiotic bacterium from mealybugs ( Hemiptera : Pseudococcidae ). This name is regulated by the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes ( Oren et al. 2021; Parker et al. 2008), not the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature ( ICZN 1999:Art. 1), and does not apply to the circumstances above.
No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Taxonomic information exchange and copyright: the Plazi approach. BMC Research Notes 2009, 2:53 for further explanation.
