Description: Caespitose plants; stems (25)40–100(300) cm; nodes in the culm glabrous. Leaf-blades 15–55 cm × 5–12 mm, flat, deeply ridged, scabrous adaxially and glabrous abaxially. Panicle (5)7–20(25) × 0.7–5 cm, open, lanceolate, without spikelets in the lower third. Pedicels shorter than the spikelets, pubescent. Spikelets 6.5–14 mm, cuneate. Glumes lanceolate. Glumes longer than the spikelet. Lower glume 5–12 mm, 1-veined; upper glume 4–14 mm, 3- veined. Lemma of male florets 5.5–10 mm, elliptic or oblong, membranaceous, scaberulous, ciliolate on margins, obtuse. Awn 2-6-mm, subapically inserted. Lemma of apical female floret membranaceous, glabrous in the lower part and scabrous in the upper part. Muticous or awned, but awn always shorter than 1 mm.
Leaf anatomy: Stomata 20–50 μm, in the adaxial surface. Hooks present. Leaf section closed with 20–40 quadrangular ribs.
Habitat: Wet meadows, 0–3850 m a.s.l. ( De Paula 1975, Sede 2012).
Distribution: Disjunct distribution in South America. From Venezuela to Peru and from central Chile and Argentina to Falkland Islands. Tropical-alpine at low latitudes ( De Paula 1975, Sede 2012).
Genome size and DNA-ploidy levels: 2C = 18.34–20.42 pg, 6 x.
Phenology: October–April.
