Birula,A. (1895) Ixodidae novi vel parum cogniti Musei Zoologici Academiae Caesareae Scientiarum Petropolitanae. I. Izvestiya Imperatorskoy Akademii Nauk , Series 5, 2 (4) 353–364.
Type depositories: ZIAC: lectotype (female) and paralectotypes (females) ( Filippova 2008), BMNH: a paralectotype (female) ( Keirans & Hillyard (2001, as syntype). MCZ: a syntype (lost) ( Keirans & Clifford 1978)
Type locality: Unalaska Island , Aleutian Islands, Alaska, USA
Type host: not stated
Comments: only the female of Ixodes signatus was described by Birula (1895). Therefore, a nymph in the ZIAC named as paralectotype by Filippova (2008), and nymphs named as “types” in Nuttall & Warburton (1911) and Keirans & Clifford (1978) and deposited in the ZSH, do not qualify as belonging to the type series of Ixodes signatus . KLC, IR and RGR visited the MCZ in 2024 and the syntype was not found there.
