Type locality: Valparaiso (Karsch 1879), Chile ?

Type host: not stated

Comments: the type locality, Valparaíso, an important Chilean city, has been treated as an indication that this tick was originally collected in the southern Neotropics , but Margaropus winthemi is an Afrotropical species, and the name “ Valparaiso ” is probably a mislabeling. Moritz & Fischer (1981) spelled the type locality as “Valpareiso” (a lapsus) .
