Koch, C.L. (1844) Systematische Übersicht über die Ordnung der Zecken. Archiv für Naturgeschichte, 10, 217– 239.

Type depository: ZMB: holotype (male) ( Moritz & Fischer 1981)

Type locality: “Carolina,” USA

Type host: not stated maculatus Neumann, 1901 , Rhipicephalus

Neumann, L.G. (1901) Révision de la famille des ixodidés (4 e mémoire). Mémoires de la Société Zoologique de France, 14, 249–372.

Type depository: ZMB: syntypes (a male and females) ( Moritz & Fischer 1981)

Type locality: Cameroon ?

Type host: Platymeris horrida , an insect; and consequently Walker et al. (2000) treated this host as incorrect Comments: Neumann (1901) listed Cameroon as the type locality of Rhipicephalus maculatus , but this tick is not established in that country ( Morel 2003, Walker et al. 2000), and both the type locality and host probably resulted from incorrect sample labeling.
