4. Kalanchoe pumila Baker (1883: 139) View in CoL ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ).

Notes:—Given the economic importance of K. pumila in the trade in indoor potplants and in outdoor cultivation in mild climates, the species and its associated nomenclature has been subject of a separate study ( Smith 2025: in press).

Taxonomic notes:—The name K. pumila is in use for an accepted species. The type of the name K. pumila is the type of K. sect. Pumilae ( Berger 1930: 407, as “§ 10”) Smith (2024b: 281). At least thus far, K. pumila is the only species included in K. sect. Pumilae .

5. Kalanchoe trichantha Baker (1883: 140) .

Type:— MADAGASCAR. Central Madagascar. [Reverend R.] Baron 977 [holotype Herb. K (image of the specimen not available for examination online, not seen); isotype Herb. P barcode P00374196 ! (image of the specimen available for examination online at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374196)] .

Nomenclatural notes:— Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 178), who regarded the [Reverend R.] Baron 977 specimen held at Herb. K as the holotype, are followed here. Unfortunately an image of the Herb. K specimen is not accessible online. An isotype of the name K. trichantha is held at Herb. P. The Herb. P isotype is a fragment of the holotype. Descoings (2003: 177) did not provide the types of synonyms.

Nomenclaturally, the type of the name K. trichantha is the type of K. [subg. Calophygia] sect. Trichanthae ( Berger 1930: 406, as “§ 4”) Smith (2023d: 178). The name of the section epithet ‘ Trichanthae ’ was derived from the name K. trichantha . The currently accepted name of K. trichantha is K. synsepala Baker (1882: 110) .

Taxonomic notes:—The name K. trichantha is at present included in the synonymy of K. synsepala . Kalanchoe synsepala is included in K. [subg. Calophygia] sect. Trichanthae (see ‘2’, above).

6. Kalanchoe brachycalyx Baker (1887: 470) , nom. illeg. ( Turland et al. 2018: Art. 53.1).

Type:— MADAGASCAR. [Reverend R.] Baron 4319 [holotype Herb. K (image of the specimen not available for examination online, not seen); isotype Herb. P barcode P00374197 ! (image of the specimen available for examination online at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/ catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374197)] .

Nomenclatural notes:— Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 178), who regarded the [Reverend R.] Baron 4319 specimen held at Herb. K as the holotype, are followed here. Unfortunately an image of the Herb. K specimen is not accessible online. An isotype of the name K. brevicalyx is held at Herb. P. The Herb. P isotype is a fragment in the true sense of the word: only a few loose flowers are kept in a capsule attached to a specimen mounting board. Descoings (2003: 177) did not provide the types of synonyms.

The name K. brachycalyx Baker (1887: 470) is a later homonym of the name K. brachycalyx Richard (1848: 312) , and the former is therefore illegitimate ( Turland et al. 2018: Art. 53.1).

Taxonomic notes:—The name K. brachycalyx Baker (1887: 470) , nom. illeg., non Richard (1848: 312), is at present treated as a synonym of K. synsepala Baker (1882: 110) , which is the accepted name of K. trichantha . The type of the name K. trichantha is the type of K. [subg. Calophygia] sect. Trichanthae.

7. Kalanchoe brevicaulis Baker (1887: 470) .

Type:— MADAGASCAR. [Reverend R.] Baron 3542 [holotype Herb. K (image of the specimen not available for examination online, not seen); isotype Herb. P barcode P00431386 ! (image of the specimen available for examination online at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/ catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00431386)] .

Nomenclatural notes:— Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 174), who regarded the [Reverend R.] Baron 3542 specimen held at Herb. K as the holotype, are followed here. Unfortunately an image of the Herb. K specimen is not accessible online. An isotype of the name K. brevicaulis is held at Herb. P. Descoings (2003: 171) did not provide the types of synonyms.

Taxonomic notes:—The name K. brevicaulis is at present treated as a synonym of K. pumila Baker (1883: 139) . The type of the name K. pumila is the type of K. sect. Pumilae ( Berger 1930: 407, as “§ 10”) Smith (2024b: 281) and, at least thus far, it is the only species included in the section.

8. Kalanchoe gomphophylla Baker (1887: 471) .

Type:— MADAGASCAR. [Reverend R.] Baron 3543 [holotype Herb. K (image of the specimen not available for examination online, not seen); isotype Herb. P barcode P00374112 ! (image of the specimen available for examination online at http://coldb.mnhn.fr/ catalognumber/mnhn/p/p00374112)] .

Nomenclatural notes:— Boiteau & Allorge-Boiteau (1995: 146), who regarded the [Reverend R.] Baron 3543 specimen held at Herb. K as the holotype, are followed here. Unfortunately an image of the Herb. K specimen is not accessible online. An isotype of the name K. gomphophylla is held at Herb. P. Descoings (2003: 158) did not provide the types of synonyms.

Taxonomic notes:—The name K. gomphophylla is at present treated as a synonym of K. hildebrandtii Baillon (1885: 468) , which is included in K. [subg. Calophygia] sect. Stellatopilosae.
